Two lighthouses guide mariners into Portsmouth Harbor. Fort Point Lighthouse, also known as Portsmouth Harbor Light or New Castle Light, is the only lighthouse on the island of New Castle, located on Fort Point. Built in 1771, it was originally sited about 100 yards from the current lighthouse. Whaleback Light, although in Kittery, Maine, is clearly visible from the New Castle Common and has formed part of New Castle’s history.
